From the madhouse

Hey, Ralph & Sharon and clan made it here safe and sound 6:00 pm (our time) - an hour earlier than we expected them, since they left at 10:00 am (ON time, but not on time! - Sharon says). The drive went well and the kids (ours and theirs) are all extremely excited. The children have finally all settled down for the night. A great start to an exciting weekend! They have already been greatly enjoying each other and everything around.

Ralph & John have been playing with magnets most of the night. We just got these fancy super strong magnets today and they're trying out all kinds of "experiments" with them. They're really neat, lots of fun. If you want to find out about them check this out.

About baby...

Yes, Betty, the news can be shared with one and all now :).
I saw Dr. Margy last week and she was already able to hear baby's heartbeat, so that means I'm at least 2 months and everything is going well so far! I haven't even been very sick.

A true Brink!

I thought you'd all be happy to hear about what a good little Brink our Anneke is. Today while I was making dinner she asked for some brocolli... I am always amazed that she actually asks for vegetables, especially when she begs for beets or spinach!....But the crowning moment was when she got her brocolli and started eating it with great smacks of satisfaction, declaring, "It's like an ice cream cone!"

Terri's Death “the longest public execution in American history”

If I can stop one heart from breaking
I shall not live in vain:
If I can ease one life in the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
Emily Dickenson (1830-1886)

The Modern world is full of the old Christian virtues gone mad. The virtues have gone mad because they have been isolated from each other and are wandering alone. Thus some scientists care for truth; but their truth is pitiless. And thus some humanitarians care only for pity; but their pity--I am sorry to say--is often untruthful.
G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)

Juicy news

Hi family!

I trust you are all looking up regularly and enjoying the family blog! Thanks Ralph for making it...and for contributing about 95% of the posts! It was over a week ago that you told Maurice to make sure I posted a juicy email to the blog, but I haven't gotten around to it till now. Maybe it was because I didn't have any juicy news to pass on... But to make up for my deliquency, I'lll try to make this as juicy as even the thirstiest among us could desire.

Anneke and Jo are singing loudly in my ear as I type. Or rather, Anneke is singing, and Jo is howling along as best he can. He's also trying to get in on the writing of this post, and every so often appears at my side to bang on the keyboard with his chubby little hand. He surely was born to trouble as the sparks fly upward! He's still waking us up at nights occasionally too... But I hope to wean him soon, and I hope that will help to get him to sleep through. All in all, he's been quite an adventure, and the best adjective I can think of for our Jo is "supersillious" (Yes, I know that word has a different meaning and spelling than that which I've attached to it! But I do so like to take small liberties with the english language when convenient!).

But back to news... I was supposed to be sharing something of interest! Well, one event of interest to me is that this summer I am looking forward to a whole new wardrobe. Maybe the men reading don't find that particularly exciting. They'd be more interested in home renovations, or something like that, perhaps... Well, we don't exactly have any home renovation projects planned, but I do plan to re-arrange my office (again!), probably sometime this fall.
Those are some of our future hopes and plans. As for current events... Anneke seemed to be coming down this the cold bug earlier this week, but whatever tiredness and coughing she was experiencing is gone now. My symptoms have been lingering a little longer and are of a more puzzling nature: fatigue, hot and cold spells, a decrease in memory, an increase in smellory (oops! another small liberty), a repugnance to those foods I usually like, and a very bad habit of not wanting to finish the last few bites of whatever is in my bowl.

If this news is not juicy enough for you, I invite you to read between the lines. I also leave it to you to form a diagnosis of my illness.
My Auntie Mary VanDyk would have done so at the first mention of weaning Joseph; the new wardrobe and the rearranging of furniture would merely have confirmed the matter, and the catalogue of symptoms would thus have been rendered completely unneccesary. But we do not all have the Steenhof intuition!

I hope this email has served to pique people's interest in the family blog!

Love Rachel

PPS: By the way, neither my Auntie Mary nor anyone else need be informed of details of this post quite yet. :)
